$250 Million for Pabst

Pabst Beer Can KoziesI’m not talking about just one can of PBR; I’m talking about the whole thing. Yup, Pabst has been sold.

It’s actually been on the auction blog for sometime now. It turns out that the previous owner, a non-profit, was violating a few rule by, you know, making a profit from the beer company. So, they were told that they had to find a buyer and unload it.

It took them a while but finally investor C. Dean Metropoulos made the right offer. Never heard of Metropoulos? How about Chef Boyardee, Duncan Hines or Ghirardelli Chocolates? He’s been behind them, too. So, he’s not a beer guy; he’s a food guy so I suppose that’s something.

Pabst isn’t the only brand included in the deal. He’s also getting Schlitz, Old Style, Lone Star and Colt 45 - a line up of nostalgic beer brands. In all, this company is the country’s fifth largest beer seller. And that’s without owning even one brewery. Actually, Metropoulos isn’t getting much more than the brands.

The last actual Pabst brewery closed years ago. All of the beer brewed for this label during this recent revival of the brand, popular with classic beer brand lovers and hipsters, has actually been brewed by MillerCoors under contract with Pabst.

Beer Pong World Champions

The tables are folded up, the leftover beer dumped out and the floors mopped. This year’s World Series of Beer Pong is over and a new champion reigns.

The team Smashing Time dominated the competition and walked away with $50,000 in prize money and lifetime bragging rights. Smashing Time is Ron Hamilton and Michael Popielarski, both of New York. Hamilton talked to the AP and said that his goals were “getting real drunk and my partner not missing, and us coming out and proving we’re the best.” Apparently he accomplished all three goals.

This is the fourth year the WSOBP has been held and it shows no sign of slowing down. Sponsored by Pabst Blue Ribbon, it attracted more than 400 teams this year.

Also, and I’m not sure how this missed my attention, but there’s a new documentary out about beer pong called “Last Cup: Road to the World Series of Beer Pong.” You can learn more about it at http://www.lastcupmovie.com/ or check out the trailer.

Toasting the President Elect

After last night’s historic election here in the US you might be wondering what’s on Barack’s to-do list. Well, we don’t often break news here at the Boozin’ Blog but we have an exclusive. In addition to putting together a cabinet for his new administration and picking out the right D.C. schools for Malia and Natasha he’s got some beer business to take care of.

We know that he’s enjoyed both Pabst and Yuengling. On the campaign trail he once specifically ordered a PBR. Another time he was handed a beer that he didn’t recognize. After asking if it was some sort of designer beer he was assured that the Yuengling in his hand was not only a regional favorite but an historic American brand.

So lift a can, bottle, or glass of whatever you’re having and join us in toasting Barack Obama. We wish him well in the new job.
