Fucking Hell: A New Beer
First, you need to know two facts.
1) Hell or Helles is a light lager style of beer. It’s popular in Bavaria and is commonly served during the hot summer months. If you’ve ever seen a picture of tourists enjoying a beer in Munich beer gardens, chances are the beer they were drinking was a Helles.
2) Fucking is a town in Austria. It’s speculated that the town’s name is derived from Focko, a man who lived in the 6th century. Along with the German towns of Kissing, Petting and Pissen, Fucking has trouble keeping it’s town signs from being stolen by curious tourists.
So, now Fucking Hell makes sense, right? Maybe not. There is no brewery in Fucking. In other words, there is no Fucking brewery. Nevertheless the European Union’s trademark authority has given permission to a German firm to brand and sell a beer – plus marketing products like tee shirts and beer mats – under the name Fucking Hell.
Something tells me that the company is going to sell more tee shirts than beer.
